The best (and most luxurious) getaways for the Ganesh Chaturthi long weekend
The second long weekend in August is almost here and this means three days of al fresco lunches, and lazy mornings. However, for those of you looking to head out of the city for the Ganesh Chaturthi weekend, we've rounded up the best destinations for some much needed R&R.

Here's a list for a quick monsoon breaks - from beaches to mountains.

Matheran
The ideal year-round weekend destination from both Pune and Mumbai, the quaint hills of Matheran provide an escape from the hustle-bustle of city life. The evergreen forests are a welcome change, and easily accessible both by road and rail.

STAY: The quaint hill station offers various stay options. For a heritage stay, you can check out The Verandah in the Forest (neemranahotels.com), a Neemrana property by the lake.

If you aren't one for crowds, September is an excellent time to plan a trip to Goa. The weather is just getting better, the shacks are re-opening after the monsoon and you can experience the coastal town in all its glory without the mad rush of the tourists. There has never been a better time to laze around on (nearly) empty beaches and sip on those Pina Coladas as you watch the sunset.

Or walk around Old Goa and discover the town's hidden gems like a local. Indulge in some scrumptious Goan-Portugese food at Palácio do Deão - a restored 18th-century Indo-Portuguese mansion, shop to your heart's content at the Anjuna Flea market or just laze around at Arambol; there is something for everyone.

STAY: If you're heading to this coastal town for the long weekend, check into the luxurious Leela, or check out the W Hotel.

Agra and Jaipur
The cities of Agra and Jaipur, both located a few hours' drive from the capital are the perfect getaway options for this long weekend. Steeped in history, one houses the Taj Mahal, while the other is home to the splendid Amer Fort. Gorge on sumptuous kebabs after your visit to the Taj or take a hot air balloon ride over the pink city; the trip will definitely be worth it.

STAY: The uber-luxe Oberoi Amarvilas is located just 500 metres from the Taj Mahal, and offers views of the monument from every room. Jaipur is home to various luxury properties, on our wishlist is the Sujan Rajmahal Palace, or if you want a more boutique stay, consider 28 Kothi.

Mussoorie
Waking up to the mist-covered hills will just be the beginning of the best part of your vacation. To avoid the crowds, go a little higher and stay in Landour. The quaint cafes, deodars as far as the eye can see and churches that will take you back in time, this small cantonment town contiguous with Mussoorie is the ideal weekend getaway. Plus it's a food lover's delight, from momos to pancakes, you'll get the best of everything here.

STAY: If you plan to stay in Landour consider Rokeby Manor and it will be worth it. If you want to stay in Mussoorie, there's the gorgeous JW Marriott to consider.
