Actress Prathyusha died in February 2002, at the age of 22.
More than two decades after the tragic death of young Telugu-Tamil actress Prathyusha shocked the film industry, the Supreme Court has delivered a significant ruling in the case. The verdict revisits a controversy that has lingered since 2002, when the 22-year-old rising star died after allegedly consuming pesticide. With fresh clarity on the cause of death and the legal battle that followed, the judgment marks another crucial chapter in one of South cinema’s most discussed tragedies.

According to PTI, the Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed the plea of a man challenging his conviction in Prathyusha’s 2002 death and directed him to surrender within four weeks. The bench, comprising Justices Rajesh Bindal and Manmohan, also rejected the plea filed by P. Sarojini Devi, Prathyusha’s mother, who had alleged foul play in her daughter’s death.

The court ruled out murder by strangulation and dismissed allegations of rape, stating that overwhelming ocular and medical evidence established poisoning as the cause of death. The bench observed that at such a belated stage, it was difficult to allege rape and strangulation as the cause.

Who was Prathyusha?

Prathyusha was an Indian actress who worked in Telugu and Tamil cinema. She made her debut in 1998 and, in just four years, appeared in 12 films across three languages. Her career was gaining steady momentum before it was cut short.

Born in Bhuvanagiri in present-day Telangana to a middle-class family, Prathyusha was the daughter of a government school teacher Mrs. Sarojini Devi. Her brother is Praneet Chandra, also known as Krishna Chandra. Before entering films, she participated in the Television Star 2000 Contest, where she was crowned Ms Lovely Smile. The recognition opened doors to the film industry.

She had signed a Kannada film before her death, and her Telugu film Idemi Oorura Babu remained unreleased. Her final release was the 2004 Tamil film Sound Party, which earned her positive reviews. She also featured in Tamil and Telugu films such as Manu Neethi, Super Kuttam, Thavasi, and Kadam Pookkal.

The 2002 tragedy

The circumstances surrounding Prathyusha’s death quickly became a matter of public scrutiny. Her relationship with Siddharth Reddy reportedly faced strong opposition from his family. In 2002, the couple allegedly attempted suicide by consuming pesticides. Siddharth Reddy survived, but Prathyusha died on the way to the hospital. She was 22.

Since then, questions persisted over whether her death was a suicide or a premeditated act.

According to PTI, in 2004, a trial court sentenced G. Siddhartha Reddy to five years’ imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 for abetment of suicide. He was also awarded an additional one year of imprisonment and fined Rs 1,000 for attempting suicide.

In 2011, the Andhra Pradesh High Court reduced his jail term to two years from the earlier five years.
