He paid Rs 3 crore for Harvard MBA. Big loan, no job, 90-day deadline to find job or leave US. How he saved his career and found a top job at Google
A determined professional's journey from failing IIT JEE to becoming a Google Product Manager highlights resilience. Despite early setbacks and doubts, he pursued an MBA at Harvard, overcame job market challenges with an AI-powered resume tool, an...

In the late 1990s, Abhijay Arora Vuyyuru's mother made the courageous decision to raise him and his sibling on her own. Because of her government job, the family relocated frequently, shifting cities every couple of years. Despite the instability, she remained a constant source of encouragement, standing by him through every academic milestone—from his early school years to his preparation for one of India’s toughest entrance exams.
As a young boy, he nurtured a simple but powerful dream: to repay his mother’s sacrifices by giving her a comfortable and fulfilling life. That ambition quietly shaped his work ethic and aspirations growing up.
The Crushing Blow and a New Direction
Years later, that dream seemed to shatter. In 2012, when the results of the IIT JEE were announced, he found himself on the list of those who had not succeeded. The moment was devastating. It felt as though he had let down the very person who had given up everything for him. However, instead of surrendering to failure, he chose to redirect his path. He enrolled at IIIT Bangalore, where he began rebuilding his confidence. Over time, he proved his abilities by winning a hackathon, which opened the door to an international opportunity in Malaysia.
Although he secured a well-paying job, a sense of dissatisfaction lingered. Watching graduates from top institutes work at his dream company reignited his ambition. He began setting his sights on pursuing an MBA from a globally renowned institution.
Defying Doubts and Chasing Global Dreams
Many advisors dismissed his aspirations, insisting that admission to Harvard Business School would be unrealistic without a prestigious engineering background. Instead of internalizing their skepticism, he chose to trust his own potential. He applied, got accepted, and made a bold financial decision—taking a massive education loan to pursue his dream. Yet, even after graduating, challenges continued. The job market was unforgiving, and he faced an intense deadline to secure employment before being forced to leave the country.
Despite applying to countless roles each week, he received little to no response. The situation was emotionally and mentally exhausting, pushing him to the brink of uncertainty once again.
In a reflective post shared on LinkedIn, he opened up about the financial and emotional realities of pursuing an MBA at Harvard Business School. He explained that the total expense of the program amounted to approximately ₹3 crore, which is over $250,000. Although he received a scholarship of ₹1 crore, he still had to arrange the remaining ₹2 crore on his own.
However, he emphasized that the monetary burden was only one part of the experience. The emotional toll of the journey proved to be far more overwhelming. A particularly difficult moment came when his mother traveled from India to attend his graduation ceremony. While the occasion should have been celebratory, he was carrying the weight of an uncertain future, as he had not yet secured a job. Despite putting on a brave face in front of her, the reality of the situation left him deeply troubled.
At that time, he was under immense pressure due to a strict deadline imposed on international students in the United States. He had a limited window of 90 days to find employment or risk having to leave the country. Without financial backing, family wealth, or a safety net to fall back on, the situation felt even more daunting. He acknowledged that life as a student in the U.S. is often portrayed in a glamorous light, but the reality can be far more challenging and stressful.
Burdened by a significant education loan, he began questioning whether his decision to pursue the degree had been the right one. The uncertainty surrounding his future led to moments of doubt and anxiety. Eventually, he managed to temporarily pause the countdown by securing a summer internship, which gave him some breathing room to continue his job search.
Drawing from his experience, he shared a few practical suggestions for others navigating a similar path. First, he advised building connections with individuals who are associated with startups in the United States or those working as research assistants at universities, as they may be able to provide employment opportunities that help extend the job search period.
Second, he highlighted that job hunting often comes down to persistence and volume. He recommended using artificial intelligence tools to tailor multiple versions of a resume, aligning them with specific job descriptions to improve the chances of getting noticed.
Lastly, he suggested reaching out directly to hiring managers through professional networking platforms, emphasizing the importance of personalizing each message rather than sending generic outreach.
Innovation, Support, and a Breakthrough
During this difficult phase, his wife became his strongest pillar of support. She stood by him unwaveringly, even taking on the responsibility of running the household while he navigated repeated rejections. Her belief in him provided the strength he needed to think differently.Realizing that conventional approaches were not working, he turned to innovation. Using his technical skills, he developed an AI-powered tool to enhance his resume. At the same time, he began sharing insights about optimizing job applications using artificial intelligence.
His content gradually gained traction, eventually catching the attention of recruiters at Google. That moment became the turning point he had been striving toward for years.
A Dream Fulfilled and Gratitude Realized
Today, he works as a Product Manager at YouTube under the umbrella of Google, while also building a strong online presence and hosting a podcast featuring industry leaders in artificial intelligence. One of the most emotional milestones came when his mother visited him in the United States and walked into his workplace. Seeing her son’s achievements up close filled her with overwhelming pride. In that moment, every setback, every rejection, and every sleepless night found meaning.
Reflecting on his journey, he credits two women as the foundation of his success—his mother, who laid the groundwork through sacrifice, and his wife, who stood firm beside him during his toughest battles
