Trust. It’s hard to earn, harder to maintain and hardest to win back, if lost. But it’s at the heart of economic progress and building businesses.

In a conversation with ETPanache, Harvard professor Tarun Khanna, who also sits on the board of SKS Microfinance, recalled events at the company and how loss of trust brought it to a standstill.

“We had this thing [the lending cycle at SKS Microfinance] humming along. Some unscrupulous politicians spread some rumours, not particularly about our company but the sector in general. They went to the women and told them that you don’t have to pay these guys back. They are doing some illegal things and we are going to shut them down anyway. So they broke the trust relationship between the circle of women. The spreading of the rumours meant that society never trusted the microfinance firms,” Khanna said.

Dwelling on the after, he spoke of the need to re-cultivate trust as the company went back to rebuilding relationships. “With the benefit of hindsight, I realise that we should have reinforced the structures around us while the going was good, and not allowed the system to be so fragile,” Khanna said.
