Tarini Jindal Handa, MD of JSW Living, says fitness, both physical and mental, is very important.

Body
“Fitness is everything for me. I think a fit body is a fit mind. My father [Sajjan Jindal] taught us that fitness is the most important thing in the world. If you’re not fit, nothing in the world can compensate. Everyone in my family starts their morning by working out. If I don’t work out, I don’t feel good. I can really feel the difference.

“I do some form of exercise every day. On Sundays, I take it a little easy. I won’t go to the gym, but I’ll try and go for a walk or a swim. I try and get some physical activity done. In the gym, I do a mix of bootcamp and cross-fit. I make sure to include yoga and pilates into my regimen as well. I always prefer to exercise in the morning.

“I love to swim. Swimming is a great way to de-stress. When I am in the water, there is no phone and no sound. I put my head under the water and it’s all gone. That’s something I really enjoy. I want to try my hand at surfing too. I am not very good at sports, but I enjoy playing tennis with my daughter.

“I’m a vegetarian and I don’t eat eggs either. The foods I like can be found in a normal Indian diet. A lot of green vegetables, lentils and yogurt are some of the staples I enjoy. To keep my mind sharp, I eat five almonds a day, soaked overnight.”

Organising one's workload leads to a sense of control and peace of mind, and there are many ways to achieve this. One way to do this is through adopting time management, prioritising tasks, and scheduling tasks to complete them. Switching between tasks and having them pile up often becomes an additional source of stress. Decentralisation of tasks or asking for help as and when required is also a good way to reduce stress levels.

Mind
“About two-and-a-half years ago, I had gone to Rishikesh to train as a Kundalini yoga teacher. I have since been practising that for 20 minutes on my own. It’s my own form of meditation practice involving music and chanting. I am such a hyper person that I don’t think I can just sit and meditate, so I practice my own version. “I think mental health is very important. As a country, we should not shy away about talking about it. In India, we often have a great support system. We have our families and friends; it’s quite an inclusive society. Maybe that’s why people feel they don’t need therapists. But with people leading more individual lives and families becoming smaller, the need for mental health awareness is apparent now.

There needs to be a huge shift in the available facilities, and we need to make mental health a priority.”

Soul
“I chant and sing to keep my soul peaceful. God is in us. He is everywhere, in every particle on the planet. You just need to connect with that. My soul is truly at peace around sunset, when the day is over and the children are playing. Looking at the sunset makes me feel grateful.”

From a stress-detecting patch to AI that mimics the human brain, the technology of the future is geared towards health solutions.
A team of US researchers has developed an ‘artificial synapse’ that does not process information like a digital computer but rather mimics the way the human brain completes tasks. The discovery can lead to energy-efficient AI devices. The graphene-based neural networks can be employed in flexible and wearable electronics to enable computation at the ‘edge of the internet’ — places where computing devices such as sensors contact the physical world.

“By empowering even a rudimentary level of intelligence in wearable electronics and sensors, we can track our health with smart sensors, provide timely diagnostics, regulate and optimise the manufacturing process,” say the researchers.

Scientists have developed a waterproof wearable patch, which when applied directly to the skin, absorbs sweat and within seconds assesses how much cortisol — stress hormone — a person is producing. “This offers a novel approach for the early detection of various diseases and evaluation of sports performance,” says lead author, Onur Parlak from Stanford University, US.

Using wearable sensor technology, researchers have developed an automatic alert system that may help people to quit smoking by sending video messages. A smartphone app automatically texts 20 to 120-second video messages to smokers when the sensors detect specific arm and body motions associated with smoking. According to the researchers, the mobile alert system that they are testing may be the first that combines an existing online platform with mindfulness training and a personalised plan to quit smoking.

Falls are a common cause of injury in older adults and can create health problems. A recent study under NIH’s Women’s Health Initiative to predict an individual’s risk of falling made 67 participants, all over the age of 60, wear a small device with motion sensors that measured their walking patterns for one week. They found that data extracted from the devices could accurately predict the participants’ risk of falling, as measured by physical examinations of unsteadiness in standing and walking.
