Taming the savage: How Nirmal Pujra and his team climbed world's second tallest peak

Fewer than 400 climbers have been to its apex.

The world saw a new group of supermen on January 16 when Nirmal Pujra and his team of 9 climbers became the first to reach the peak of K2 in winter. Why is this a superhuman feat? Because K2, the second tallest peak in the world, is considered to be among the most dangerous.

Pujra’s team had to brave -60 degree Celsius. And when the moment of glory arrived, they walked shoulder to shoulder so that they would enter the record books together.

Death on Peaks
The 8,611-m K2, which is only 200 m shorter than Everest, is known as the “savage mountain”. Fewer than 400 climbers have been to its apex. More people have been to outer space.

Elite Company
Purja, the team leader and a former member of the UK Navy's elite special forces, created a record in 2019 when he climbed all the 14 8,000-m-plus peaks in just over six months. The previous record was held by South Korean Kim Chang-ho, who achieved this feat in 7 years, 11 months and 14 days. In 2019, Purja’s photo of a traffic jam at Everest had gone viral.
