BENGALURU: Bengalureans are giving weekend travel a fitness spin. Weekend fitness outdoors is the new way to unwind for the city’s health-conscious. Fitness coaches are taking people out of the confines of gyms for group workouts, functional training, yoga, meditation, and talks on nutrition around Bengaluru.
Take the case of Monu Nair, 41, who broke his gym routine of five years for an overnighter at a camp site in Nachikuppam, Krishnagiri, with his colleagues in December. The group pitched tents and enjoyed the night over a campfire and got ready for a 5K run early next morning. Nair, a senior consultant at Dell, said they also got to soak in some Vitamin D during a lesson in functional training with squats, planks, push-ups and stretches in the hills.
“Being in a non-AC and a no-gadget environment was a welcome break,” says Nair. “When you are in the corporate world, your idea of success in life is what you see in the office. It is in such outdoors that you see unfiltered happiness in basic living like sleeping in tents and eating community food. It puts things into perspective and redefines happiness and success.”
Fitness coaches and camping specialists are organising weekend fitness outdoors with activities like functional training, nature walks, sunrise meditation and early morning runs and treks at Instagrammable locales like Durga Hills, Nandi Hills, Chamundi Hills (Mysuru), farm houses on the city’s outskirts and in a scenic valley near Kanakapura Road.
“Short vacations combined with fitness reduce anxiety. Since the group comprises like-minded people, they make a good socialising platform outside the office environment,” says Amit Shetty of campsite marketplace Campmonk. The beauty of trekking up a hill in fresh air is getting cardio the old school way,” he says.

Fitness coach Kez Klein, who also curates weekend outdoors, notes, “While IT companies offer gym facilities, they remain unused most of the time. I observed that tech freaks, however, are happy to step out and participate outdoor. Disconnecting from their office and phones is the key.”
Tai chi instructor Umar Farooq notes that many Bengalureans are done and dusted with drinking and smoking on the weekends and are exploring ways to unwind on a healthy note.
Freelance yoga and lifestyle coach Ananya Chaudhuri adds, “Many are recognising the need to stop the chase and slow down with a healthy weekend where they get fresh air, farm food and a space to introspect.”
