Rise with the Sun
According to a new survey by HealthifyMe - a health and fitness app, almost 70 per cent of Indians prefer to work out between 4 am and 12 pm. From this group, 40 per cent preferred to work out before 8 am while 30 per cent worked out between 8 am and 12 pm.

Studies show that working out in the morning helps not only boosts physical activity but also mental energy. Having successfully completed a workout first thing in the morning makes you feel more accomplished and you’re also more likely to keep active throughout the rest of the day.

Pankaj Munjal, chairman and managing director of Hero Cycles Ltd, is said to wake up at 7 am and head straight for a workout to begin his day.

Take Heart, Night Owls
If mornings aren’t your cup of tea, don’t worry, you’re not alone. 30 per cent of Indians mentioned in the survey preferred working out in the evenings between 4 pm and 8 pm.

Some research suggests that exercising late in the evening can actually help people fall asleep faster and better. However, experts recommend keeping a gap of two to three hours between working out and your head hitting the pillow to allow your body to return to its resting state.

Whether you’re hitting the gym first thing in the morning or winding down with some restorative exercises post work, the key to maintaining your fitness goals (even after January) is to find a timeslot that you can commit to and one that makes you feel good.

Yes, we know part of the fun of the festive season is letting go a little now and then. But remember that, let go a little only on occasion. What you put into your body has a direct co-relation with your mood and while sweet, starchy and fried things may be in prominence this season, it would be wise to keep a track of just how much you’re consuming. A sugar spike may give you temporary happiness but the slump and strain it puts on your body can adversely affect your mood. Stick to low impact carbs and nuts which help keep sugar cravings at bay.

While it may be tempting to sit indoors when everyone is cosy and perhaps coupled out there, do not. Socialising is good for your mental health, so make sure you meet up with friends and loved ones this season. Choose them wisely though. Try to meet people you genuinely like and have a good time with. Forcing yourself to hang out with people you don’t necessarily get along with can make you resent the season more and tempt you to stay away. Alternatively, you can accept invitations to social gatherings and take a close friend along.
