Suriya waited four years to marry Jyotika. Actor’s father Sivakumar recalls how she stayed with his family for 18 years despite having the option to move to Mumbai

Power coupleSuriya and Jyotika celebrated 20 years of marriage with a vow renewal ceremony surrounded by their family and close friends. It was one of the happiest occasions of this year. Videos are being widely shared on social media.The couple also shared pictures and videos from the ceremony, along with a long note about their journey together. Calling it “The Sequel”, they said the vow renewal was not about celebrating a perfect marriage but about the bond they have built over the years. Recently, Suriya's father and actor Sivakumar reacted to their celebration.

Sivakumar reacts to Suriya-Jyotika 20th anniversary celebration

He shared on the red carpet of JFW Favourites Awards 2026, "Love doesn’t happen to everyone. When his mother once asked Suriya why he wasn’t falling in love with someone, he said, ‘One can’t fall in love with just any girl.’ Then he fell in love with a girl (Jyotika) from Bombay (now Mumbai). He waited for four years, adamant that if he were to get married to someone, it would be only to her [and they eventually did]."




Sivakumar further added, "After marriage, she could have made Suriya move to Bombay and settle there. I couldn’t have said anything. But she stayed here for 18 years. Besides, these days, heroines generally aren’t ready for childbirth after marriage and even push their husbands to leave their parents. But Jyotika got married and had two children while living with us."

Expressing his happinnes to see an actor couple happily married for 20 years and still carrying the same love, he said, "I’m proud to have such a son and daughter-in-law.

Suriya's work front

Meanwhile, coming to their work front, Suriya was last seen in Vishwanath and Sons alongside Mamitha Baiju. He has several projects lined up. His upcoming film with director Jithu Madhavan is titled Scene. He is also set to collaborate with director TJ Gnanavel on another project backed by Hombale Films.
