Sunny at crease; bats for Fr Mascarenhas

When the controversy of Father Mascarenhas’ election advisory to St Xavier’s students was raging, we asked famous alumni of the institution for their views on the subject.

One of them was Sunil Gavaskar. The cricket legend and current BCCI boss was then busy with the IPL’s UAE chapter. Last week, though, Gavaskar emailed his opinion. “My view for whatever it is worth on Fr. Mascarenhas’ email is that we live in a free country and people are free to express their opinions as long as they are not defamatory,” he said.

It’s a little late in the day for this, but it is still worthwhile to know how India’s achievers feel about issues during these tumultuous times.
