Sundar Pichai recalls his love story with wife, Anjali, says getting a job at Google was easier than proposing to her. Who is Anjali Haryani? A look at her education and career

For Sundar Pichai, his years at IIT Kharagpur were about much more than academics. The campus holds deeply personal memories for the Google CEO, including the place where he met his future wife, Anjali. In a video message released by IIT Kharagpur, Pichai reflected on his student days and recalled how the institute introduced him to computer programming and gave him some of his earliest opportunities to work with computers.

His college experience belonged to a very different technological era. Instead of smartphones, cloud platforms, and artificial intelligence, Pichai remembered moving around the campus with floppy discs. The contrast between those early days and the advanced technology landscape he operates in today highlights just how dramatically the digital world has evolved.

His recollections also went beyond classrooms, laboratories, and academics. Pichai recalled fondly how he savoured delicious meals at Harry’s, participated in the Illu festival, spent long nights preparing for studies in B308, and formed lasting bonds with his wingmates. He also spoke warmly about the professors who influenced him during his time at the institute.


In an earlier interview in 2017, he recalled how he met her at an all-girls hostel. He proposed to her during his final year in IIT, and many of his friends didn’t know about his love life and called him “Chhupa Rustom".

After they graduated from college, Anjali stayed behind while Sundar travelled to the US to complete his doctoral studies. Sundar's financial situation at the time prevented them from having regular conversations. Anjali moved to the USA after a long time apart. Meanwhile, Sundar Pichai had secured a position with a US semiconductor business. He believed that this was the ideal moment to wed Anjali, the love of his life, since he had a stable career. Before proposing to Anjali, Sundar sought approval from her parents. Following their marriage, the pair continued to reside in the United States.

In an interview with ETV Bharat, Sundar said that he was an introvert and was suffering from nerves when he proposed to Anjali. “I feel it is easier to get a position at Google than it was to propose to Anjali.” He also thanked his wife, saying she was his advisor and helped him not quit Google and stay till he became the CEO in 2015. In 2019, he became CEO of Alphabet Inc.

“Accepting my love is her greatness. Though I was not financially settled, she believed in me,” he said.

As per her LinkedIn profile, Anjali works as a business operations manager at Intuit. Anjali is originally from Kota. They have two children, Kavya and Kiran. She has a degree in chemical engineering, as per a Times of India report. Before working at Intuit, she was at Accenture.
