It was meant to be a classy commemoration over the weekend to celebrate an icon’s birthday, the first since his passing, at one of his favourite venues. International speakers who flew in exclusively for the occasion mostly spoke straight from their hearts as did family members who have been handed over the baton to carry forward his legacy. The immaculately planned evening would have been perfect save for a few off notes. For example, a retired babu spoke more about their own life’s journey than that of the departed. Some barged in to sit in places demarcated for others while the grand finale was a musical performance by a virtuoso whose set list clearly showed he had the wrong brief for the evening.
