What’s in a name? Quite a lot, if you’re this Mumbai-based automaker. Word in the corridors is that the company’s top brass has developed an aversion to four-letter car names, convinced they bring bad luck. The superstition didn’t emerge out of thin air: a surprising number of the firm’s four-letter-badged models have either been retired or are sputtering along in the slow lane. Even some of its high-profile launches—models on which the company had pinned significant hopes—have gone nowhere, reinforcing the internal view that four-letter names are best avoided.
