Sudden weight gain or feeling very tired? Could be fatty liver. Harvard doctor shares 8 early symptoms of fatty liver most people miss
Dr. Saurabh Sethi highlights early warning signs of fatty liver disease, often subtle and easily overlooked. These include unexplained weight gain, persistent fatigue, abdominal pain, and changes in urine or stool color. The condition, linked to i...

One of the most common indicators is sudden weight gain, particularly around the abdomen. Constant tiredness or weakness, even after proper rest, may also signal liver issues. Some people experience pain or swelling in the upper right side of the abdomen, while others notice changes like dark urine, pale stools, or easy bruising from minor cuts. Fatty liver can also disrupt fat metabolism, leading to elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and in serious cases, jaundice.
According to Dr. Sethi, fatty liver is closely tied to insulin resistance and high blood sugar, which makes it particularly dangerous for those at risk of diabetes. Mayo Clinic explains that this condition, known as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), develops when excess fat builds up in the liver despite little or no alcohol consumption. It is most often seen in people who are overweight or obese.
NAFLD itself can range from simple fatty liver (hepatic steatosis) to a more advanced form called nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). In NASH, fat deposits trigger inflammation and liver damage. Left unchecked, this can progress to cirrhosis—severe scarring of the liver—and even liver cancer. Symptoms of NASH and cirrhosis may include itchy skin, abdominal swelling, shortness of breath, swollen legs, spider-like veins under the skin, red palms, enlarged spleen, and jaundice.
