JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon believes one habit can change your career
Career advice is easy to find. Every successful leader seems to have a different formula. But JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon believes young professionals often overlook one habit that can shape their careers over time. Speaking at the Reagan National Economic Forum last year, the Wall Street veteran shared a simple message that, according to him, can help people keep learning, build stronger relationships and stay ahead in a competitive world.

His advice wasn't about getting another degree or chasing promotions. Instead, it focused on something people can start doing right away.

Jamie Dimon's three-word mantra for career success

For Dimon, the answer comes down to just three words: "Talk to everybody."

He said young professionals should not limit themselves to speaking only with people they already know or agree with. Instead, they should make a habit of meeting clients, colleagues, competitors and even people with opposing opinions because every conversation offers a chance to learn something new.

Explaining his point, Dimon said, "Get out, get out, get out, get out. Talk to people, talk to clients, talk to her. I talk to everybody… Eisenhower had a lunch or dinner every week with the opposing side's leadership…You learn a lot, you learn to respect a lot, you learn to respect your opposing views, you learn about complaints, you learn about competitors."

According to him, real-world conversations help people understand different perspectives and often teach lessons that cannot be picked up from meetings or reports alone.

Don't stop observing and learning

Dimon also said curiosity should never fade, no matter how experienced someone becomes. He encouraged professionals to keep watching what is happening around them instead of becoming comfortable with what they already know.

As competition continues to grow across industries and countries, he believes staying informed has become even more important.

Sharing that advice, he said, "Don't put your head in the sand, observe, observe, observe and have all your people do it. And it's a never ending process because we have competitors from around the world."

The message, he suggested, is simple. Listen more, ask questions, understand what others are doing and never assume there is nothing left to learn.

Dimon is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of JPMorgan Chase & Co., one of the world's biggest financial services companies. According to the JPMorgan Chase website, the company has assets worth about $3.2 trillion and operates across investment banking, commercial banking, consumer financial services, asset management and financial transaction processing.

He became CEO of JPMorgan Chase in January 2006 and took over as Chairman of the Board the following year. Before that, he led Bank One as Chairman and CEO. His career has also included senior leadership positions at American Express, Commercial Credit, Travelers, Smith Barney and Citigroup.
