After nine years, countless demogorgons and more bike rides than Hawkins ever deserved, Stranger Things has finally closed its chapter. Netflix’s blockbuster series wrapped up with a supersized Season 5 finale titled The Rightside Up, giving fans an emotional, action-packed goodbye. The episode doesn’t rush to answer every question immediately, instead taking viewers on one last chaotic adventure through the Upside Down before quietly returning home.

Stranger Things Season 5 finale breakdown

The finale opens with no time to catch a breath. Hawkins’ favourite group of unlikely heroes launches its final plan to stop Vecna and the Mind-Flayer once and for all. The mission is divided across several dangerous locations. Eleven teams up with Kali and Max inside Vecna’s mind, while Hopper and Murray prepare explosives that could wipe out the Upside Down completely. Elsewhere, the rest of the group races through the Abyss to rescue kidnapped children, including Mike’s younger sister, Holly.

Series co-creator Matt Duffer previously described the finale as resembling the end of a Dungeons & Dragons campaign, where every character has a role to play. As he told Netflix, the story reaches a point where there’s no need for long explanations; everyone simply steps into action. That approach is felt throughout the episode, with characters spread across the Creel House, Hawkins Lab, the WSQK radio tower and deep inside the Upside Down.

The stakes are high, and not everyone makes it out unscathed. Steve comes dangerously close to death after falling from the radio tower, only to be saved at the last second by Jonathan. Meanwhile, tragedy strikes at Hawkins Lab when Kali is shot during a military ambush led by Lieutenant Akers. Her death becomes one of the most heartbreaking moments of the finale, pushing Eleven closer to her final decision.

As the battle escalates, Vecna is revealed to be fully merged with the Mind-Flayer, forming a terrifying spider-like monster that embodies everything the group has been fighting since Season 1. Will once again proves crucial, using his lingering connection to Henry to briefly control Vecna from the inside. It’s a reminder that Will’s bond with the Upside Down never truly left him — and that he remains central to the story’s end.

Who dies in the Season 5 finale?

Just when things seem lost, Eleven arrives in the Abyss and leads the final attack. Working together, the group weakens the hive mind, creating an opening for Eleven to strike. The turning point comes when Joyce confronts Vecna directly and ultimately decapitates him, ending his reign for good. Holly and the other kidnapped children are rescued, and Hopper and Murray trigger the explosives that finally destroy the Upside Down.

But the victory comes at a cost. Eleven stays behind as the world collapses, making it appear that she sacrifices herself to save everyone else. For a moment, the series seems to confirm her death, leaving both the characters and viewers devastated.

The episode then jumps ahead 18 months. Hawkins is slowly rebuilding, with officials blaming the destruction on an earthquake. Life moves forward in bittersweet ways. Steve is coaching Little League, Dustin becomes his school’s valedictorian, Robin returns to radio, and Joyce and Hopper take a major step in their relationship by getting engaged. The group graduates from high school.

In the final moments, the show circles back to where it all began, a Dungeons & Dragons game in the Wheelers’ basement. This time, it’s Holly and her friends taking over.

So, is Eleven really dead? The series leaves that answer open. Mike suggests that Eleven may have survived thanks to Kali’s final illusion, choosing to believe she escaped and is living somewhere far away. It’s a theory the group and the audience is invited to accept if they wish.

In the end, Stranger Things closes not with certainty, but with hope, friendship and the choice to believe in a happier ending.
