Recap of Stranger Things 5 Volume 1 (spoilers alert!)
Volume 1 opens with a chilling reminder of Will’s past trauma. We are taken back to his early days in the Upside Down, where he is seen fighting to survive as Vecna closes in. Cut to the present, and Hawkins is no longer the quiet town we once knew. Eighteen months after the devastating earthquake, the area is under strict military control, creating an atmosphere of fear and suspicion. Normal life has been replaced by checkpoints, patrols and a constant sense of danger.Despite the chaos, the group tries to hold on to some sense of normalcy. Steve and Robin start a radio show, bringing in moments of humour and nostalgia, while Dustin continues to grieve Eddie’s death. But peace is short-lived. Will soon realises that his connection to Vecna never truly ended. He can still sense the villain and the Demogorgons, making him both an asset and a target.
Things turn personal when Karen and Ted Wheeler are injured during one of the attacks, and their youngest daughter Holly, is abducted. As the group digs deeper, they discover that Holly and the other children were lured by a mysterious figure called Mr Whatsit. The truth is far more disturbing.
Mr Whatsit is Vecna himself, appearing in his human form as Henry Creel, also known as 001. Will senses that Derek, one of Holly’s classmates, could be the next victim, pushing the group into a risky rescue attempt that goes terribly wrong after a Demogorgon ambush.
On another front, Hopper and Eleven break into a military base and make a shocking discovery. Kali, also known as 008, has been captured by the authorities. Just like Eleven and Henry, she was once experimented on, and her return hints at a powerful alliance forming against Vecna.
The biggest moment of Volume 1 arrives when the group is cornered by Demogorgons with no way out. As Mike, Lucas and Robin face almost certain death, Will finally unlock his dormant powers. In a scene fans had predicted for years, he destroys the creatures using psychic abilities, with blood trickling from his nose, clear proof that Will is far more powerful than anyone realised.
Actor Noah Schnapp, who plays Will, told Tudum that filming this scene was deeply emotional for him. He shared that he felt incredibly grateful for how the Duffer Brothers wrote Will’s arc in the final season, calling it a defining moment for his character and one of his favourite scenes to shoot.
