Aluminium foil is usually associated with cooking and food storage, but the humble kitchen staple can also come in handy during household chores. One simple use is protecting furniture, particularly its edges, from paint, dust, spills and accidental splashes. If you have leftover aluminium foil scraps at home, here’s how they can help protect your furniture without requiring expensive protective materials.

Use aluminium foil to cover furniture edges

Furniture edges can be particularly vulnerable during painting, cleaning or DIY projects. Aluminium foil can be moulded around corners and narrow edges, creating a temporary protective covering.

Simply tear off a piece large enough to cover the section you want to protect and press it gently around the edge. Its flexibility allows it to fit around different shapes more easily than some rigid coverings.

Protect furniture during painting

Painting a room or working on a DIY project can result in accidental drips and splashes. Aluminium foil can be wrapped around exposed furniture edges, handles, legs or other small sections close to the work area. It can also be useful for covering small hardware that you don't want covered in paint. Once the work is finished, remove the foil carefully and dispose of or reuse it if it remains clean.

However, avoid placing foil directly on delicate, wet or freshly finished surfaces if it could cause scratching, trapping of moisture or other damage.
