Storyline of Rooster

Rooster, at its core, explores the complicated dynamics between a father and daughter while also touching on themes of personal bias and self-reflection. Steve Carell essays the role of Greg Russo, a renowned pulp writer credited for his easy-going ‘beach read’ novels. After his marriage falls apart, a disillusioned Greg develops a fictional hero called Rooster, who stands in sharp contrast to his own personality. The narrative takes a turn when Greg travels to meet his daughter Katie at the New England College of Ludlow.

Katie is an art history professor dealing with a turbulent phase. Her marriage is on the rocks after her husband Archie abandons her for a younger graduate student, leading to a very public emotional breakdown. Matters escalate when a so-called accidental fire breaks out at Archie’s home, putting Katie’s job at risk.

The college president, Walter Mann, offers her a non-negotiable deal for her to keep her position. Thus, Greg is invited to spend the semester at the institution as a writer-in-residence. The move forces both father and daughter to confront unresolved tensions while moving through the complexities of modern academics.
