SRM AP University stresses on importance of active learning, calls it a major goal for coming years

Following its board meeting, SRM AP university is carving out new learning experiences with technology, faculty research and student career development.

SRM University – AP, Amaravati, held its annual board meeting and a university conference on January 24 at its campus. The event was followed by strategy meetings with the VC advisory board to lay out a competitive vision and future for the university. SRM AP is carving out an expansion plan with bigger, better resources and programs for faculty research to enhance the overall student learning experience.

With new international collaborations, the university is looking forward to integrating innovation and technology-driven pedagogies such as active learning forums into the curriculum. It has collaborated with Minerva University in San Francisco to introduce active learning for its students.


According to Jamshed Bharucha, vice-chancellor, SRM AP, active learning principles allow students to better retain what they have learnt. The principles also enable better comprehension of complex ideas. He said that the university has three visions for the next few years — active learning, advanced research and career development of students.

The annual meeting was attended by the SRM AP board of governors and management, which included P Sathyanarayanan, president, SRM AP, Elizabeth Bradley, president, Vassar College, Nicholas Dirks, emeritus chairman, UC Berkeley, Pradeep Khosla, chancellor, UC San Diego, Prasant Mohapatra, vice-chancellor research, University of California-Davis, Kerry Healey, president, Babson College, and Damodar Acharya, former director, IIT Kharagpur. Also present were leading academics from Tufts, Dartmouth, UC Berkeley, Cooper Union, Olin College of Engineering, and Vassar.

Among these were distinguished leaders in their disciplines such as Teresa Dahlberg, dean of engineering, Syracuse, Patricia Jackson, V-P development, Brown, Margaret Newell, deputy provost, Harvard, Rajini Srikanth, dean, Liberal Arts School, University of Massachusetts, and Niranjan Bose, senior advisor, Bill Gates Foundation.
