Zoho’s co-founder Sridhar Vembu recently reflected on his time at IIT Madras alongside Raju Narayana Swamy, an exceptionally talented peer who later rose to prominence as a civil servant. Vembu’s remarks came in response to a widely circulated post on X that highlighted Swamy’s professional journey and his strong stance against corruption.

Revisiting their college days, Vembu described Swamy as an outstanding student whose academic achievements set him apart early on. Both pursued computer science at IIT Madras, and Swamy had secured an impressive rank in the IIT JEE of 1985, reportedly among the top ten. Coming from a modest background in a small town in Kerala, he stood out in a cohort where many high-ranking students typically hailed from major urban centers. Vembu noted that while many of their classmates, including himself, eventually moved abroad for opportunities, Swamy made a deliberate choice to remain in India.

Swamy’s decision to stay back proved pivotal. After completing his B.Tech in Computer Science in 1989, where he graduated at the top of his class, he was offered a fully funded opportunity to study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Despite the prestige associated with such an offer, he declined it and instead focused on preparing for the Union Public Service Commission examination. This choice, as highlighted in the viral post, was rooted in a sense of responsibility toward the country, as he believed his education had been supported indirectly by taxpayers and that he owed a contribution in return.

His commitment paid off when he secured the top rank in the UPSC examination in 1991, joining the Indian Administrative Service under the Kerala cadre. Over the years, Swamy developed a reputation for integrity and firm resistance to corrupt practices. His career, however, was not without challenges. His refusal to compromise often resulted in frequent transfers, with reports suggesting that he was moved more than thirty times during his service spanning over three decades.

At one point, frustration over being sidelined led him to formally question the authorities about being placed in positions without meaningful responsibilities. His professional journey also included setbacks, such as being overlooked for the role of chief secretary. In 2025, the Supreme Court rejected his appeal challenging this decision, marking another difficult phase in his career.

Beyond his administrative duties, Swamy has built an impressive intellectual profile. He pursued advanced studies and earned a doctorate in law, demonstrating his commitment to continuous learning. In addition, he has authored over thirty books, contributing significantly to literature and public discourse. His literary accomplishments were recognized with the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award.

Swamy’s life story continues to attract attention not only for his administrative service but also for his scholarly achievements and unwavering ethical stance. His journey reflects a rare blend of academic excellence, principled governance, and dedication to public service, making him a compelling figure in contemporary India.
