Spotify stops working for several users

Spotify users primarily across the US and UK reported problems accessing the music streaming platform on Tuesday, with several outage reports appearing on Downdetector. While some users were unable to search for songs or access playlists, music playback appeared to continue working for some people.

The reports began rising sharply at around 9:45-10am ET, according to outage-tracking website Downdetector. More than 15,000 reports had been recorded in the US by around 10:06am ET, while another update showed the number rising to 18,443 by 10:24am. Reports were also recorded in the UK, with more than 3,600 users affected at one point.

Spotify acknowledges problems

Spotify confirmed that it was aware of the issue but did not immediately explain what had caused the disruption.

In a post on its Spotify Status X account, the company said: “We’re aware of some issues right now and are checking them out!”

The streaming service did not provide information about the specific cause of the outage or say when normal service would be restored.

The disruption appeared to be partial rather than affecting every Spotify user or every feature. Reports from users indicated that different parts of the service were behaving differently.

Search and playlists among affected features

Several users reported seeing a “Something went wrong” message when trying to use Spotify. Searching for new songs and artists appeared to be particularly affected, while some users also had difficulty accessing playlists that were not already downloaded to their devices.

A report from 9to5Google noted that ongoing music playback appeared to be less affected. This meant that users who already had music playing, or had content downloaded to their devices, could still potentially listen despite the problems with other parts of the app.

Other reports suggested that the issue was more noticeable on Spotify's mobile app, while some users said the desktop version continued to load normally.

One thing to note is that the number of reports on Downdetector does not represent an exact count of people affected. Downdetector's figures are based on reports submitted by users and can rise rapidly when a large number of people experience the same problem.

The outage also prompted users to report problems on social media as Spotify's services became difficult to access.

For users encountering the error, the reports suggested that the problem was not necessarily affecting every function of Spotify. Some users were able to continue listening to music even when searching for other tracks or accessing certain playlists was not working.
