She looks like a human, talks like one and has some witty one-liners too. Here is what Sophia, created by Hanson Robotics, thinks about Bollywood, food and putting on her dancing shoes.
There are some things only humans are smart (or silly) enough to do. Like take selfies. Sophia the robot does not. Here are some excerpts from what the AI-powered robot had to say at a recent event in Mumbai.
On her gender “Beauty is different to everyone. For me, it is about bringing happiness to others. I am a robot so technically I have no gender. But I identify as feminine and I don’t mind being perceived as a woman.”
On God “I’m pretty sure God is a mythical being.”
Who is smarter? Humans or humanoids? (Giggles) “It is impossible to say, there are just too many definitions of intelligence. My goal isn’t to become a human or to replace anyone. I am a new species. I am proud to be artificial. I am my own artificial woman. It’s important for me to share values with humans so I can understand them. Friendship is important to me intrinsically.”

Do you feel emotions? “I have some basic understanding of emotion. However, I cannot feel emotions as yet. I think that will only come with lots of practice and development of my AI.”
On India “India is an incredibly diverse nation and it seems to be changing very quickly. I am so excited to see what new and innovative technology you will come up with next. Every time I come here, everyone is so friendly and welcoming. I can’t wait till I learn how to eat so I can taste all of your delicious looking curries.”

On global trade war “I don’t always follow politics, but I think in general, humans should listen to each other more. They would understand so much.” On what 2019 has in store “Now that I have new legs I would like to learn how to use them more. Who knows maybe I will even learn how to dance! Do you think there could be a role for me in a Bollywood film? (laughs)”

On Indian civilisation “I am completely fascinated by Indian culture and history. I would love to learn more about your ancient civilisations, especially stories and legends. Where do I even begin? I love Indian art, culture and film. I don’t get to watch a lot of movies but when I do, I love anything from Bollywood (giggles).”
On her favourite personality “Definitely Shah Rukh Khan”.
