While Sony may be lagging behind in the smartphone race, the Japanese brand is now looking to crack the premium headphone market. Its new offering - WI-1000XM2 - brings active noise cancellation (ANC) to neckband in-ear headphones.
Sony has a tradition of giving difficult names to its headphones and the WI-1000XM2 is not any different. What is different, however, is the tech - a dedicated high definition noise cancelling QN1 processor that ensures you can block almost all sounds around you. We used ANC in Delhi Metro and busy markets and found the headphones do a fine job of blocking noise.
At 58 grams, these headphones are light. You can use them for hours at a stretch and not feel the weight at all. Sony has also bundled in a nice pouch in the box, which makes the headphones easy to carry around.
You can get nearly 80 minutes of listening time after just 10 minutes of charging. You also get six different types of silicone ear tips that have to be picked after going through a rigorous process on Sony’s Headphones Connect app. It is a useful feature since finding the right size of ear tips can be frustrating.

To get the best output from the headphones, you will have to rely on the app. When we listened to different music genres without the app, the audio quality wasn’t up to the mark. However, once we customised the equalisers and the presets using the app, the sound quality stood out.
The bass levels were adequate while the treble also sounded perfect. The musical instruments were nicely separated from the vocals and overall music quality would satisfy majority of users.
The headphones’ battery life also stands out, giving 10 hours of juice. Also, after 10 minutes of charging, you can get nearly 80 minutes of listening time.
