Sony unveils massive PlayStation 4 update Firmware 1.70

On the heels of the announcement that PlayStation 4 has sold over 7 million units, Sony has unveiled its upcoming firmware update for the console. Firmware 1.70 brings with it additions that should please PS4 owners. It has “features that were incorporated as a result of your great feedback,” Sony’s Scott McCarthy wrote.

The first addition is something called SHAREfactory, a “new rich video editor app for PS4 that makes it easy for you to customise gameplay videos.” The second addition is the ability for players to not only upload their SHAREfactory-edited videos directly to Facebook, but to put them on an external USB-connected storage device. “Other PS4 SHARE enhancements include the ability to change the recording time of your gameplay to shorter increments, the ability to change who you share your clips with on the SHARE screen, and the removal of default saves for screenshots and video clips,” according to McCarthy.

Interestingly, “the 1.70 update will allow you to switch off HDCP, enabling you to capture video directly from your HDMI output so you can record and share longer clips of your gameplay sessions,” he continued. The final significant update doesn’t have to do with gameplay capture, but with the ability to download games early.

Firmware 1.70 will allow players to pre-load the games they pre-order, providing more immediate access to brand-new games. This means when a game comes out, you don’t have to download it once it appears for sale on the PlayStation Store. You’ll be given an option to download it several days early, so you’re ready to play the first minute it’s available.

It’s unclear when PlayStation 4 firmware update 1.70 will be available to download, though the post indicates it will be soon.
