On the performance front, the phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 856 CPU capable of 5G connectivity.
Japanese electronics major Sony announced today that it will ship its new flagship, the Xperia 1 II smartphone on July 24. It will cost $1,199, which puts it in the same ballpark as high-end phones from Apple and Samsung. Pre-orders open on June 1, and Sony will reward early birds with a gift: a free pair of Sony’s WF-1999XM3 noise-cancelling wireless earphones. The phone borrows the latest technology that feature on the most sophisticated standalone camera produced by Sony. The triple camera setup on the upcoming phone has been developed in conjunction with the engineers who crafted the Sony A7 III and other mirrorless cameras.
The Xperia 1 II features three 12-megapixel cameras at the back – zoom, ultrawide and wide. It is auto-exposure enabled and is capable of shooting at up to 20 frames per second (fps) in burst mode, making it handy for shooting actions scenes or sport events. It also uses software to track animal or human eyes in the frame.
Keeping with the recent trend of large-screen flagships, the Xperia 1 II sports a 6.5-inch 21:9 HDR OLED display, which can be paired with select Sony DSLR or mirrorless cameras, thereby acting as a second screen while shooting on those devices.
On the performance front, the phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 856 CPU capable of 5G connectivity. A 3.5mm headphone jack is also thrown in, and a 4,000mAh battery will ensure that the music does not die down anytime soon.
Sony is hoping that prospective buyers, cooped up at home, and wishing to dabble in film-making will be drawn to the professional broadcast capability of its new flagship. Apart from supporting high-end video recording, the phone will also have an HDMI input port.
The Xperia 1 II will support LTE in the US but plans to unveil the Xperia Pro 5G with high-speed mmWave 5G tech in the American market. The Xperia 1 II will be the company’s first 5G smartphone in Europe. It remains to be seen if 5G adoption will pick up anytime soon in Europe, given the state of confidence in the technology after conspiracy theorists linked it to the coronavirus pandemic that has claimed many lives in Western Europe.
