Sometimes it pays to be selfie-ish

Extraordinary times require extraordinary measures, they say. And harnessing the spirit of the times certainly figures among these measures. So, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) leader Vaiko’s solution to the reported funds crunch faced by his party is appropriate: charging for selfies taken by cadres with their photogenic leader. The MDMK circular telling its rank and file to donate a minimum of Rs 100 to the official kitty for a selfie with Vaiko should be keenly examined by all parties given that such photo-ops have become de rigueur for people in public life. Personalised photographs have already replaced autographs these days, so putting a price on sought-after faces seems only logical.

No doubt MDMK is well aware that while Rihanna may allow free snaps occasionally, celebrities like Justin Bieber already charge $2,000 for each selfie, and a little less than half that amount for a mere group photo. Indeed, Vaiko’s fellow septuagenarian Sylvester Stallone charges $1,500 for selfies during promotional tours. Why, even celebrity judges of talent shows on TV are known to pocket $50 for a selfie with fans. Given that Indians regard their political leaders with a degree of reverence equal to that of film stars and cricketers, Rs 100 each from the party faithful for a selfie with the leader almost sounds too modest.
