Smoking in young adults can lead to proteinuria, other chronic kidney diseases

Nicotine in tobacco causes immense damage to the kidney when it enters the system.

Dr Satish Chhabra

Consumption of tobacco is one of the leading causes to fatal diseases across the globe. Tobacco contains 'nicotine', an injurious substance, which plays a significant role in damaging one's kidney. World Health Organization (WHO) has time and again reported the ill-effects of tobacco intake that can have serious implications on the lungs and other body parts.

According to WHO's Global Adult Tobacco survey of 2016-17, around 28.6% of smokers are aged 15 and above. Various sources influence the younger generation to adopt this habit that can majorly deteriorate their health condition.

Peer pressure: Teenagers find it hard to desist from indulging in harmful practices like smoking if their friends are doing it too.

Celebrity influence: Most young adults who consider actors as their role models take up smoking when they see celebrities taking a puff or two in movies.
The list of problems caused due to tobacco intake is innumerable. When nicotine is consumed frequently, it tightens the blood vessels restricting the flow of blood to other body parts. Further, the harmful chemicals that are released into the blood cause kidney damage.

Tobacco significantly harms blood vessels causing an increase in blood pressure and heart rate, reducing the flow of blood to the kidney. Excess consumption of tobacco releases toxins in the body which increases the risk of proteinuria (excessive amount of protein in the urine) which is the root cause of chronic kidney disease.

Smoking and drinking has become an acceptable part of the lifestyle of young adults in India. Here are few ways to fix this problem before it's too late:

- Parents are a role model for children. Hence, it is vital they influence their thinking patterns from a young age. As they become adults and take up smoking, parents should try to gain their trust and build a good rapport to eliminate or reduce the negative impact.

- The government must implement stringent smoke-free policies and open de-addiction centers in college campuses. US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health states that adolescents are the most vulnerable population to tobacco use. The policies should be better as most have easy access to tobacco, drugs and cigarettes around their colleges.

- It is important to encourage proper medication for the ones who are addicted to nicotine, and encourage them to be part of a rehabilitation center.
Youth, who enter into the phase of adulthood, pass through various stages of being exposed to drugs, alcohol and tobacco which shape their future and health. One step at a time with sheer focus can lead to a brighter and healthier future!
