Slowdown hits luxe weddings, but Sandeep Khosla says brides still want designer lehengas

The designer said that weddings are becoming smaller and calmer.

Sandeep Khosla believes brides may spend less on jewellery for their big day, but not on dresses.
The guest list has become shorter, the menu more compact, and the wedding trousseau more economical. In this time of slowdown, the big fat Indian wedding is no longer that big or fat.

“Weddings are becoming smaller, calmer and people are a bit wary at the moment,” says designer Sandeep Khosla.

“Even party planners have been impacted because weddings are getting smaller or people are going abroad because you get such good deals there.”

According to the designer, everything in the industry is impacted at the moment, even bespoke wear. “It’s a big concern for everybody and it has hit us in its own way. We’re actually trying to rework our embroideries to keep it pricepoint perfect [for the customer].”

Calmer spends
Asked if customers are more conservative about their wedding purchases this season and the type of detailing they choose on their garments, Khosla says no.

Serve The Best Meal At Your Luxe Destination Wedding
1/6
If there's one thing that leaves a lasting impression on the minds of weddings guests, it's the food served. However, not everybody gets it right. Delhi-based chef and Indus Culinary director Marut Sikka says usually that's the case at destination weddings. So, if you're set to tie the knot at a luxury destination, Sikka lists out some pointers for the menu:

One of the first thing Sikka cautions is to avoid glassware at beach weddings as people tend to drop them or accidentally fall, thereby making the beach dangerous for guests to walk on. "I would suggest using disposable wares and cutlery like bamboo, degradable paper and some plastics." Going by the chill vibe of the beach, Sikka suggests serving cold foods and street food from across the world like pizzas, frittata, burgers, hotdogs, kebabs and chaat, rather than a formal sit-down dinner.

The open space gives you a chance to keep things interactive — think open-air counters like barbeques, tandoors, grills and stir fries. "I would make everything off the fi re and on to the plate. Everything should lend to drama and an interactive feel," says Sikka. A formal, sitdown meal with beautiful table settings would be ideal here.

In foreign or exotic locations, attention should be given to local ingredients. "I would suggest planning a menu that is structured around local produce as much as you can." he says.

Considering the environment there is very sensitive, Sikka recommends simple, clean food that doesn't create a mess. "Opt for a sit-down dinner which creates minimal fuss and mess. Pastas, fondue and Japanese food would lend very well. If you want a buffet, the food can't be very oily and you can't have live counters as the smoke may damage the delicate interiors."

“Recession is all about price points, not design changing. Nobody is going to wear a plain ghagra for their wedding. They’ll want some detailing on it, some way to make it special. But they might keep it calmer. They’ll have less embroidery on it. Maybe they’ll go for machine instead of hand or hand machine instead of hand… But nobody is going to wear a plain garment.”

Bling it down
Khosla believes that instead of their bridal dresses, women may decide to spend less on jewellery for their big day. “Maybe they won’t wear five sets of jewellery, they’ll wear one,” he says.

The trend today, according to the designer, is to wear just the maang tikka or big hoop earrings without a necklace.

Circle of life
Even so, the designer is confident that the industry will come out of this patch. “Everything is a circle. You go through a low to hit a high eventually and when you’ve been hitting a high, you have to go through a low. It’s the circle of life. At the moment, there’s a recession, [but] let’s hope that it clears out sooner than later. I’ve got my fingers crossed.”
