The sixth season of Slow Horses ends with the Slough House team fighting for survival, a dangerous political cover-up reaching its breaking point and one of MI5’s most vulnerable agents facing a potentially fatal threat. The finale, “Judgment Day”, brings several storylines together but leaves viewers with one enormous question: will River Cartwright survive? Read on to find more details.

Jackson Lamb’s Plan To Save The Slow Horses

The finale opens with River (Jack Lowden) being abandoned after his captors throw him out of their vehicle. He contacts Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), informing him of Diana Taverner’s (Kristin Scott Thomas) attempt to hand Sid Baker over to the Russians. He also reveals that J.K. Coe (Tom Brooke) has been killed, prompting Lamb to act quickly. Meanwhile, the Slough House agents are still in danger from Frank Harkness (Hugo Weaving) and the Russian assassins pursuing them. Taverner’s unauthorised operation against a Russian agent has put her position at risk, while the people connected to the operation are being targeted to prevent the truth from emerging.

Lamb comes up with a plan to redirect the blame towards billionaire Damien Cantor (Harry Lloyd), whose money helped fund the operation. He persuades Natasha Carrington to support the version of events that portrays Cantor as the Russian mole. The scheme allows Lamb to protect his team while giving the Russians a new target.

Who Dies In The Slow Horses Season 6 Finale?

The episode delivers several devastating losses. Coe’s death hangs over the team, while Emma Flyte (Ruth Bradley) meets a tragic end during the confrontation at Taverner’s Suffolk retreat. Flyte attempts to protect Roddy Ho, Shirley Dander and Reece from the attackers. However, when her ammunition runs out, Harkness kills her.

The finale also confirms the death of Struan Loy earlier in the season, following the shocking attack in which he was burned alive in a shipping container. These losses underline how dangerous the mission has become for the team. Louisa Guy (Rosalind Eleazar), who is badly wounded during the climactic violence, survives.

But the experience changes her relationship with Slough House. At the memorial service for the fallen agents, she makes it clear that she does not intend to return. In its finale review, The Times described the season’s conclusion as “taut and sombre”, highlighting the high body count and the emotional weight of the departures.

Frank Harkness, River And Sid’s Unexpected Reunion

River’s relationship with Sid (Olivia Cooke) takes a surprising turn. After the two reconnect, their romantic moment offers a rare pause amid the violence. But the relief does not last. Harkness ultimately intervenes to save River from Jane, the surviving Russian assassin. He kills her before she can finish the attack, then shares a tense conversation with his son about their family history and the complicated legacy of River’s grandfather. When the authorities arrive, River allows Harkness to leave rather than stopping him. Their exchange leaves the relationship between father and son unresolved.

Is River Cartwright Dead? Season 6 Ending Explained

The finale’s final moments deliver the biggest shock. After returning to his grandfather’s house, River suddenly collapses, apparently poisoned by a nerve agent. The episode does not confirm whether he dies, leaving his fate hanging as the credits roll. Decider reported that the apparent poisoning may be linked to the nerve agent associated with the season’s earlier events.

River may have come into contact with it when he handled a crowbar, although the show leaves the exact circumstances open to interpretation. There is a hopeful clue for fans familiar with Mick Herron’s books: River survives a poisoning incident in Bad Actors, the novel that provides material for the upcoming seventh season. However, the television adaptation could still change the source material.

With Taverner managing to protect her position, Cantor facing the consequences of Lamb’s scheme, and River’s survival uncertain, Season 6 closes on a grim note. The next chapter will have to answer whether River can recover and what his father’s actions mean for the future of Slough House.
