Sleeping on one side damages heart or brain? Apollo doctor ends the debate with facts. 4 things that cause damage

According to the doctor, the idea that sleeping on one side can damage organs is a myth. The heart and brain are well-protected and are not affected by whether a person sleeps on the left side, right side, back, or stomach. He stressed that no sleeping position directly causes organ damage in otherwise healthy individuals.
Instead, long-term harm to the heart and brain is linked to uncontrolled blood pressure, unmanaged diabetes, smoking, chronic poor sleep quality, and ignoring medical conditions. These factors, not sleeping posture, raise the risk of heart disease, stroke, and other serious complications.
What science says about left-side sleeping
Health information platform Healthline notes that sleeping on the left side may actually benefit people who suffer from acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). A 2022 study cited by Healthline found that left-side sleeping reduced acid exposure in the esophagus and helped clear stomach acid faster compared to right-side sleeping. Some studies have observed changes in heart electrical readings when people sleep on their left side. Research dating back to 1997 and later studies in 2018 showed that lying on the left can slightly shift the heart’s position, which affects how electrocardiogram readings are recorded. However, researchers explained that this change is due to the heart’s position in the chest and the testing method, not because the heart’s function is being harmed.
Is sleeping on the right side safer?
There is ongoing debate about whether the right or left side is better for heart health. Some sleep experts have suggested that right-side sleeping could compress major blood vessels, such as the vena cava. However, studies reviewed by Healthline have found no proof that right-side sleeping increases the risk of heart failure.A 2018 study referenced by Healthline reported that many people with dilated cardiomyopathy naturally preferred sleeping on their right side. Another review published in 2019 found no difference in outcomes for pregnant individuals or babies based on whether the mother slept on the left or right side.
Medical experts, including the Apollo doctor, emphasize four major factors that truly harm the heart and brain: uncontrolled blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, and consistently poor or insufficient sleep. Managing these risks has far greater impact on long-term health than worrying about sleeping on one side.
