JK Rowling is a lot more than the magician behind Harry Potter. Rowling, best known for all things Potterverse, has also written several stories outside of the 'Harry Potter' universe.

On her 53rd birthday, here's a look at some of her other significant works:

'The Casual Vacancy'

The book was published in 2012 and was Rowling's first publication since the Potter series, and her first novel for adult readership. This was a far cry from Potter's alternate universe. Rowling managed to address some of Britain' biggest social issues through the book.

'The Casual Vacancy' was also made into a mini series starring Rory Kinnear, Emily Bevan, and Michael Gambon. The book has shades of dark humour, is extremely thought-provoking, and constantly manages to surprise readers.

'The Cormoran Strike Detective Series'

JK Rowling literally cast a spell with these series. Almost a decade ago, there were rumours that after spinning magic in the world of wizardry, Rowling is all set to showcase her skills in the genre of crime fiction.

She first wrote the 'The Cukoo's Calling' in 2013 under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, followed by 'The Silkworm' and 'Career of Evil'.

Apparently, Rowling had been meaning to write crime-thrillers for the longest time, and she has mentioned in multiple interviews that Strike almost walked into her head.

J.K. Rowling continues to write 'The Cormoran Strike' series under the name of Robert Galbraith to maintain the distinction from her other writing.

'Very Good Lives: The Fringe Benefits of Failure and the Importance of Imagination'
JK Rowling delivered a powerful, deeply impacting speech at Harvard University. Commencement speeches are never easy and this 24-minute speech of the author could be the turning point in anyone's life.

The speech teaches a lesson on how to embrace failure and how to use our imagination to better both ourselves and others. Drawing from stories of her own post-graduate years, she addressed some of life's most important questions with equal parts pragmatism and emotions.

We wish that the master wizard continues to mesmerise us with her words.

For the 'Harry Potter' series, she used the acronym JK (even though she doesn't have a middle name) at her publisher’s request, who thought a book by a female author might not work. She chose the 'K' for Kathleen, her paternal grandmother.
