India’s First VJ Ruby Bhatia
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Ruby Bhatia was a face that defined youth television in India. From music shows to celebrity interviews, she became a household name and one of the first pioneers of Indian pop culture on television. Yet, despite her rising fame, Ruby made the unexpected choice to step away from the limelight and embrace a life centered on spirituality and personal growth.

Born in Canada to Indian parents and adopted by her aunt and uncle, Ruby’s childhood was marked by challenges. Growing up as the only Indian student in a predominantly white school, she faced racism and bullying, especially when wearing ethnic clothes for cultural celebrations. In a conversation with Siddharth Kannan on his YouTube channel, Ruby reflected on these experiences, saying that they shaped her resilience and personal growth.

Her path to India’s entertainment industry began almost by chance. A casual participation in the Miss India Canada pageant turned into victory, opening doors to Mumbai. Despite her academic interest in philosophy and spirituality, Ruby’s success brought her to the heart of India’s television industry.

Becoming India’s First Video Jockey

Ruby’s entry into MTV India was serendipitous. With little idea about what being a video jockey entailed, she auditioned and was selected, eventually becoming the first VJ of Channel V in India. For six months, she hosted every show, interviewing figures ranging from everyday people to Amitabh Bachchan.

During her Channel V days, Ruby also appeared in shows like Kasautii Zindagii Kay and films including Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon, and Halla Bol. Speaking to Siddharth Kannan, she shared memories of these years, including meeting celebrities and navigating her early career in television.

Ruby’s personal life during this period included a brief marriage to singer Nitin Bali, which ended after two years. Years later, she met Ajith at an ashram, who became her husband, spiritual guide, and father of her children, as she described in her discussion with Kannan.

Walking Away from Fame

At the age of 30, Ruby reached a turning point. Balancing the glamorous world of television with her spiritual aspirations led to emotional strain. Speaking to Siddharth Kannan, she explained that she felt torn between two lives and needed to step back to find meaning and energy. Choosing spirituality over stardom, she gradually left the industry and focused on a grounded and purposeful life.

Today, Ruby Bhatia works as a life coach and mentor. In her interview with Kannan, she shared that she provides guidance on weight loss, personality development, and personal well-being. She also runs a 24/7 women’s helpline, offering support for issues ranging from anxiety and depression to personal growth. Ruby homeschools her two sons, creates motivational content online, and lives a life away from public scrutiny.
