Shocking diagnosis at 28
Following a series of tests, including an ultrasound-guided biopsy, Anvita was diagnosed with breast cancer at 28. The news came as a shock not only to her but also to her family. Young, physically fit and with no family history of the disease, she found it difficult to comprehend how cancer had entered her life. Due to the size of the tumour, doctors recommended a mastectomy along with breast reconstruction surgery. Initially, she felt relieved, believing that surgery might be enough to treat the disease.
During the 6-hour procedure, however, doctors discovered that the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes, significantly altering her treatment plan. As a result, she had to undergo an intensive cancer treatment journey that included chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hormone therapy and targeted therapy. While recovering from surgery was physically demanding, accepting the emotional reality of her diagnosis proved equally challenging. What she had assumed would be a short phase of treatment gradually turned into a years-long battle requiring immense courage and patience.
Emotional turmoil to becoming fearless
One of the most difficult moments came after her first chemotherapy session, when she lost most of her hair. For Anvita, it was not merely a physical change but an emotional blow that affected her confidence, identity and sense of control over her own body. Like many young breast cancer patients, she struggled to recognise herself as she adjusted to the visible effects of treatment. Despite the pain, uncertainty and turmoil, she refused to let the disease define her.
