Hedy Lamarr captivated audiences as one of Hollywood's biggest stars, but her most remarkable legacy had nothing to do with the silver screen. Long before the world relied on Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS, the Austrian-American actress co-invented a communication technology that would eventually help shape all three. Despite being celebrated for her beauty and film career, Lamarr's scientific brilliance went largely unnoticed for decades. Today, she is widely remembered as one of the pioneering minds behind modern wireless communication.

From rising actress to Hollywood icon

Born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler, Hedy Lamarr began acting in Europe. According to the National Women's History Museum, she studied under renowned director Max Reinhardt in Berlin and landed her first film role in the German production Geld auf der Straße in 1930.

She gained international attention in 1932 with the controversial film Ecstasy before leaving Europe. After fleeing her first husband, Friedrich Mandl, she secretly moved to Paris and later travelled to London, where she met MGM executive Louis B. Mayer, who offered her a Hollywood contract.


Lamarr soon became one of Hollywood's most recognisable stars, earning acclaim for films including Algiers, Boom Town, White Cargo and her biggest commercial success, Samson and Delilah. She later appeared on television before retiring from acting after her final film in 1958. In 1960, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The inventor behind a wartime breakthrough

While Hollywood saw Lamarr as a glamorous actress, she spent much of her free time experimenting with inventions. According to the National Women's History Museum, businessman and aviator Howard Hughes encouraged her passion for innovation. He reportedly provided Lamarr with equipment to use on film sets, introduced her to scientists and engineers, and showed her his aircraft factories, inspiring her to think about ways to improve military technology.

Lamarr went on to develop several inventions, including an improved traffic signal and a dissolvable tablet designed to create a soft drink. But her most significant contribution came during World War II.

In 1940, Lamarr met composer George Antheil. Together, they developed a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes using spread spectrum and frequency hopping technology. Their "Secret Communication System" was designed to prevent enemy forces from jamming radio-controlled torpedoes by rapidly switching communication frequencies.

Although the invention was not adopted during World War II and the Lamarr-Antheil patent expired before it was put into operational use, the underlying principles later became foundational to secure wireless communication.

How her invention shaped today's wireless technology

The frequency hopping concept developed by Lamarr and Antheil became an important building block for spread spectrum communication. According to the National Women's History Museum, the technology eventually formed part of the foundation for modern wireless systems, including Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth. Variants of spread spectrum communication help protect wireless data from interference and interception, making secure communication possible across countless devices used today.

Because of this pioneering work, Lamarr has often been referred to as the "mother of Wi-Fi," although the technologies used today evolved through decades of additional research and engineering.

Recognition came decades too late

Despite her groundbreaking work, Lamarr never received financial rewards from her invention because the patent expired years before the technology entered practical use. For much of her life, she remained known primarily for her acting career rather than her scientific achievements.

Recognition finally arrived in her later years. In 1997, Lamarr and George Antheil jointly received the Pioneer Award from the Electronic Frontier Foundation. She also became the first woman to receive the Invention Convention's Bulbie Gnass Spirit of Achievement Award.

Lamarr died in 2000, but her legacy continued to grow. In 2014, she was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in recognition of her contribution to frequency hopping technology, cementing her place not only as a Hollywood legend but also as one of the pioneering innovators behind modern wireless communication.
