For Ananya Joshi, an Indian biotechnology graduate, that dream came to an abrupt halt after months of job searching ended in disappointment. Recently, she shared a tearful video on Instagram documenting her departure from the country, marking the end of a chapter she had hoped would be the start of a lifelong career.

From Graduation to the American Dream

A 2024 master’s degree holder in Biotechnology from Northwestern University, Joshi moved to the US with hopes of professional growth. She joined a biotechnology startup under the F-1 Optional Practical Training (OPT) program, which allows international students to work in their field for up to 12 months. For Joshi, the US represented her first experience of financial independence and a chance to establish herself professionally.

Impact of Layoffs

Her journey faced an unexpected setback when her company underwent downsizing, resulting in her layoff. With the OPT program imposing strict timelines, Joshi faced mounting pressure to secure another role within a month to maintain her legal status. In a LinkedIn post, she had shared the urgency of her situation, noting the ticking clock on her STEM OPT. Despite months of applications, interviews, and networking, she was unable to find a suitable position.

A Tearful Goodbye

On September 29, Joshi shared an emotional video on Instagram capturing her departure. She described leaving the US as “by far the hardest step” in her journey and expressed gratitude for her experiences. In her post, she wrote, “America was my first home as a financially independent adult and that will always be a special thing to me. Though short-lived, I really appreciate the life you gave me. AMERICA, I LOVE YOU.”

The video went viral, eliciting empathetic responses from many viewers who understood the difficulty of leaving a life abroad, while some questioned the portrayal of her struggle, noting her flight in business class.

Though her time in the US has ended, social media updates suggest Joshi has relocated to Dubai to explore new opportunities.
