Dr. Ubaidur Rahman of Delhi’s Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital shared a chilling case of a 24-year-old woman whose routine vitamin D3 supplement caused severe toxicity. Despite a healthy lifestyle, she developed nausea, fatigue, swelling, kidney failure, and heart instability, nearly leading to cardiac arrest.
Dr. Ubaidur Rahman, an orthopedic and sports surgeon at Delhi’s Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, shared a startling case on Instagram highlighting the hidden dangers of seemingly harmless supplements. The patient, a 24-year-old woman, led a disciplined, healthy lifestyle. She exercised regularly, ate clean meals, and had no habits like smoking or drinking. Yet, she began experiencing persistent nausea, severe fatigue, and heart palpitations that disrupted her sleep.

From Subtle Symptoms to Life-Threatening Signs

According to Dr. Rahman, her condition worsened rapidly. Her legs swelled, her face appeared puffy, and she developed excessive urination. Friends and family initially attributed her symptoms to stress or overwork. The situation escalated when she collapsed at work, prompting urgent medical evaluation.

The reports revealed critical kidney failure, dangerously elevated calcium levels, and heart instability. Initial suspicions ranged from cancer to rare genetic disorders. However, further investigation uncovered a startling cause: a common vitamin supplement.

The Hidden Danger: Cholecalciferol Toxicity

Dr. Rahman identified cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3) toxicity as the culprit. The young woman had been taking a standard supplement she believed was entirely safe. The overdose led to kidney damage and nearly caused cardiac arrest. Dr. Rahman warned that this condition, though preventable, can be life-threatening if unmonitored, especially among young adults self-administering vitamins without guidance.

“Millions of people take supplements thinking they are harmless, but even everyday vitamins can turn dangerous in excess,” Dr. Rahman wrote. He emphasized monitoring dosage, consulting physicians, and recognizing early warning signs such as nausea, fatigue, swelling, and irregular heartbeat.

A Cautionary Tale for Young Adults

This case, reported via Dr. Rahman’s Instagram post, underscores that no supplement is inherently risk-free. Awareness, proper dosing, and medical supervision are crucial, even for health-conscious individuals who avoid traditional risk factors like smoking or alcohol.
