A Delhi-based entrepreneur recently shed light on a common but often overlooked struggle faced by small businesses—dealing with dishonest customers. Varun Ghai, founder of the baby clothing brand Mama and Peaches, in an Instagram video revealed an incident where a customer attempted to cheat his company out of Rs 5,000 using deceptive tactics.

The customer, who lived in one of Delhi’s most affluent areas, possibly in a Rs 50 crore bunglow, placed an order but never actually completed the payment. Instead, she sent a digitally altered screenshot that falsely showed the payment as successful. When the business team followed up, she denied any wrongdoing. Later, she escalated the situation by claiming she hadn’t received her order and even resorted to accusing the brand of being dishonest.

Rather than confronting her aggressively, Ghai decided to handle the matter differently. He personally called the customer and offered to visit her to apologize—an unexpected move designed to make her reflect on her actions. The strategy worked. Within ten minutes of that call, the woman claimed she had suddenly found the package and proceeded to make the payment.



Interestingly, this wasn’t the end of their interaction. After the incident, the same woman went on to place eight more orders with the brand, becoming a repeat customer. What started as an attempt to deceive a small business turned into a lasting customer relationship—ironically built on a foundation of dishonesty.

This episode highlights a harsh reality for entrepreneurs: customer fraud can happen anywhere, even among those who appear well-off. But it also underscores the power of calm, strategic thinking in tense situations. By choosing not to engage in a shouting match, Ghai turned a potential loss into a win—not just financially, but also in terms of brand loyalty
