She was married off at the age of 14 and became a mother of two at the tender age of 18. She had to quit school before completing class 10 to look after home and hearth. However, a simple decision to attend a Republic Day parade transformed N Ambika’s life forever. She observed her husband, a police constable, salute senior IPS officers, inspired her to go on her own journey to crack the UPSC exam.

Driven by an unwavering desire to transform her life, Ambika, a resident of Dindigul, Tamil Nadu, courageously set out on a completely new professional path, displaying remarkable resilience, discipline, and persistence. Although she had discontinued her schooling at an early age and lacked a formal academic background, she refused to let those setbacks define her future.

Instead, she remained firmly committed to her long-cherished ambition of joining the Indian Police Service (IPS). With extraordinary dedication, she resumed her education through a distance-learning programme, steadily earning her Class 10 qualification, followed by Class 12, and eventually completing her graduation despite the challenges she encountered along the way.


According to X user Vikas Alwys who shared her incredible journey online, she failed the exam three times but cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination with All India Rank 118 and became an IPS officer.

Today, Ambika holds the position of Deputy Commissioner of Police in Mumbai, where she oversees law and order in one of the country's most demanding and fast-paced metropolitan regions. Her role requires handling high-pressure situations, maintaining public safety, and addressing the complex policing challenges that come with serving in India's financial capital.
