Shaheen Mistri of Teach For India is the winner for the Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation’s award for development and welfare of women and children this year. The award has been instituted in the memory of Jankidevi Bajaj, and aims to honour individuals for their efforts in the field of humanitarian and social work. This is the 42nd edition of the Jamnalal Bajaj Awards. Mistri was felicitated at the annual award function in the presence of the Chief Guest Sadhguru, founder, Isha Foundation, Rahul Bajaj, chairman, board of trustees, Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation and R. A. Mashelkar, chairman, council of advisors of the Foundation.
Since the institution of these awards, the Foundation commemorates the birth anniversary of Jamnalal Bajaj every year. Winners are presented with a citation, a trophy and a prize amount of Rs 10 lakh.

Mistri founded the first Akanksha Centre in 1989, enrolling 15 children and engaging college friends as volunteers. This became the Akanksha Foundation, a non-profit organisation to maximise the potential of children living in low-income communities through education. She founded Teach For India (TFI), with the vision of providing education to all children across India by building a movement of like-minded people committed to ending educational inequity in India. TFI runs a selective, two-year, full-time teaching Fellowship where Fellows work to transform the lives of students in under-resourced schools. According to a press note shared by the Foundation, TFI reaches 38,000 children through the direct work of over 1000 Fellows and 250 staff members across seven cities (Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, and Mumbai) currently.
On the occasion, Rahul Bajaj said, “There is an utmost need to identify those who unswervingly dedicated their entire existence in propagating and preserving the noble ethos and philosophy of Gandhian values. It is our privilege to honour our awardees and many such individuals for their everlasting efforts in touching the lives of the people of the deprived communities and for transforming them emotionally, economically and socially, thereby, personifying Gandhian principles with resilient conviction. The Foundation through Jamnalal Bajaj Awards strives to honor the selfless and courageous real life, unsung heroes.”

At the ET Awards, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman reassured India Inc that the Modi-led government has addressed key issues to boost growth. While sounding an optimistic note, she tried to alleviate fears by saying that there were major infrastructure projects lined up as well.
Sitharaman, who was dressed in a green and red silk saree, felicitated Falguni Nayar with the Businesswoman of the Year award. The founder and CEO of Nykaa, while accepting the award, acknowledged her company's contribution to "the way beauty is consumed in India."
Sitharaman also feted E Sreedharan, known as the Metro Man, for his stupendous contribution to the growth of Delhi Metro and its expansion in other cities. The ever-humble Sreedharan while receiving the award on "behalf of colleagues, contractors and suppliers", reiterated that massive infrastructure projects cannot be completed by an individual alone.

Jaitley, who passed away earlier this year in August, was posthumously honoured with the Lifetime of Public Service award. His wife, Sangeeta Jaitley, and daughter Sonali, made a rare public appearance to receive the honour from Shah.
The famous last surname - Bajaj - continued to make news at ET Awards. While Rahul Bajaj's poser to Amit Shah on "climate of fear" went viral, another Bajaj made news, for the right reasons. Bajaj Finance won the Company of the Year award, with Rajeev Jain, MD & CEO, retracing the firm's journey "from issuing a few thousand loans a year to approximately 27 mn loans this year."
Another India Inc star who shone at the ET Awards was Sanjiv Mehta. The Chairman of HUL, who has been a veteran with the group having served more than two decades, was recognised as the Business Leader of the Year. In a year of slowdown and muted consumer sentiment that has seen the FMCG sector hurt over the past two quarters, Mehta has steered the HUL ship amid choppy waters.
And while he may not have been able to do an encore of his CM act, Devendra Fadnavis emerged a winner. The former Maharashtra CM was recognised as the Business Reformer of the Year award, and in his acceptance speech he emphasised that even in Opposition, he will "continue working to improve the business environment."
