Shah Rukh Khan bags his career's first National Film Award for 'Jawan'

Shah Rukh Khan has been awarded the prestigious National Film Award for Best Actor for his performance in Jawan, marking a significant moment in his over 30-year-long film career. The accolade, announced as part of the 71st National Film Awards on August 1, is the actor’s first-ever National Award. He shares the title this year with Vikrant Massey, who has been recognised for his widely acclaimed role in 12th Fail.

A Milestone in a Decorated Career

Already a recipient of honours such as the Padma Shri from the Government of India and France’s Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and Legion of Honour, Shah Rukh Khan’s addition of a National Film Award further cements his legacy in Indian cinema. This recognition comes at a time when the actor has had a particularly successful phase at the box office, returning in 2023 with three major releases—Pathaan, Jawan, and Dunki. Combined, the films collected over ₹1,300 crore in India and crossed ₹2,500 crore globally.

Jawan: A Blend of Action and Message

Directed by Atlee and released in September 2023, Jawan was a high-energy action drama that resonated with audiences and critics alike. Shah Rukh Khan played dual roles—Azad, a jailer-turned-vigilante, and Vikram Rathore, his older persona. The film focused on themes like corruption and social injustice, with a group of female vigilantes aiding Azad in his mission. The cast also included Nayanthara as a determined police officer and Vijay Sethupathi as the antagonist Kaali. The film’s mix of emotional storytelling, action, and strong performances helped it become one of the year’s biggest hits.

Vikrant Massey and Rani Mukerji Also Recognised

Alongside Khan, Vikrant Massey received the Best Actor honour for his portrayal of Manoj Kumar Sharma in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s 12th Fail, a film inspired by a real-life story of determination and success against all odds. His understated performance won widespread critical acclaim.

Rani Mukerji was named Best Actress for Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway, a film based on the real experiences of Sagarika Chakraborty. Rani played the role of Debika, a mother battling a foreign legal system to reclaim her children. The performance earned her not only critical praise but also a Filmfare Critics Award earlier.

National Recognition Ceremony and Jury Presentation

The winners were formally announced by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The jury submitted the list of recipients to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in the presence of Minister of State Dr. L Murugan and I&B Secretary Sanjay Jaju. The event was live-streamed through official government platforms, allowing public access to the results.
