Sec 377 decriminalised: Aamir Khan hails 'historic day', Preity Zinta calls for freedom to love

Voices across India's cultural spectrum have welcomed the apex court's decision.

Signalling winds of change, the Supreme Court on Thursday lifted a colonial-era ban on gay sex . A five-judge panel in the Supreme Court was unanimous in its decision to end the law, commonly known as "Section 377", that prohibits "carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal".

On Twitter, the Supreme Court's decision was hailed by one and all. Directors, actors, actresses, writers - voices cutting across the cultural spectrum tweeted in praise of the apex court's decision.

Karan Johar, who was the first celebrity to tweet, called it a 'historical judgment...and a huge thumbs-up for humanity and equal rights'. Actress Sonam Kapoor-Ahuja shared a picture in support, that expressed optimism of a "day when there won't be labels".

Nimrat Kaur, who has been in the news recently thanks to a rumoured link-up with Team India coach Ravi Shastri, termed it "equal love, equal lives."

Other B-town celebrities like Preity Zinta, Rajkummar Rao, Arjun Kapoor and Farhan Akhtar also took to Twitter to thank India's judicial system for the historical verdict.

Other Twitter regular voices - Ayushmann Khurana and Swara Bhasker - also weighed in, lauding the apex court for its revolutionary verdict.

LGBTQ activist and head of Godrej India Culture Lab, Parmesh Shahani, however, had a word of advice for the media. He tweeted that the removal of Section 377 was long overdue.
