LOS ANGELES: Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson has become the best-paid actress in the world, according to Forbes magazine.

Johansson, 33, made USD 40.5 million in pre-tax earnings from June 1, 2017, to June 1, 2018, quadrupling her income from the previous year.

She played Black Widow in this year's hit Marvel movie "Avengers: Infinity War" and will return to the role in the 2019 installment from Walt Disney Co's Marvel Studios.

Johansson beat out Angelina Jolie, who ranked second with USD 28 million thanks mainly to her upfront pay for "Maleficent 2".

After her first Oscar and 'La La Land's' immense success, 28-yr-old actress Emma Stone has dethroned Jennifer Lawrence to become Forbes' highest-paid actress of 2017.

Together, the world's 10 highest-paid actresses tallied a combined $172.5 million between June 1, 2016, and June 1, 2017, before fees and taxes.

Their success remains remarkable considering that female characters fill only 28.7% of all speaking roles in film according to a 2016 study.

Last year, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson topped Forbes' list of highest-paid actors at $64.5 million, more than double the amount made by Stone this year.

The list examined actresses the world over, but no stars from Asia made the cut, including Priyanka Chopra or Deepika Padukone, who featured at No 10, on last year's list.
