After years of uncertainty, delays and censorship-related hurdles, Diljit Dosanjh's long-awaited film Satluj has finally reached audiences. The film, which was previously known as Panjab '95, remained stuck for nearly three years despite generating major buzz. Based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, the film has now quietly made its digital debut, giving viewers a chance to watch a project that has been surrounded by controversy since its completion.

Streaming details of Diljit Dosanjh's Satluj

The wait has finally come to an end, with Satluj now streaming on ZEE5. The film was originally titled Ghalughara, before being renamed Panjab '95. It has now been released under its third title, Satluj. Directed by Honey Trehan and produced by Ronnie Screwvala, the biographical drama stars Diljit Dosanjh in the lead role alongside Arjun Rampal, Surinder Vicky, Varun Badola and Geetika Vidya Ohlan.

The film is inspired by the life of Jaswant Singh Khalra, a human rights activist who exposed the alleged illegal cremation of thousands of unidentified bodies in Punjab during the militancy period. Khalra's investigation brought national attention to the issue before he mysteriously disappeared in 1995. Years later, four police officers were arrested in connection with his alleged abduction and murder. In 2007, the Punjab and Haryana High Court enhanced their punishment from seven years to life imprisonment.

Satluj has been one of the most talked-about unreleased films in recent years because of its prolonged battle with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Reports suggested that the board proposed around 120 cuts and also objected to the film's title. The controversy delayed its release for years and sparked widespread discussion within the film industry.

More about Satluj

The title itself changed more than once during the film's journey. It was initially called Ghalughara, before being renamed Panjab '95. Even after discussions over the certification, the title had to be changed once again, eventually becoming Satluj. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) also reportedly intervened during the certification process, following objections raised over the title and edits.

The film's release troubles did not end there. In 2023, Panjab '95 was selected to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). However, it was unexpectedly removed from the festival's lineup just a day before its scheduled screening. Although reports suggested there were political reasons behind the decision, the festival organisers did not officially confirm the reason for its removal.

Speaking about why he agreed to star in the film, Diljit Dosanjh said that Jaswant Singh Khalra's sacrifice and contribution to humanity deeply touched him. The actor shared that the script moved him because it is rooted in the real-life struggles, courage and sacrifices of people whose stories deserve to be told. According to Diljit, Khalra's life was the biggest reason he decided to become part of the project.

Directed by Honey Trehan, Satluj brings historical events with a personal story of courage and justice. The film has a talented supporting cast, including Arjun Rampal, Surinder Vicky, Varun Badola and Geetika Vidya Ohlan, who play key roles alongside Diljit.

With its long-delayed release finally becoming a reality, Satluj gives audiences the opportunity to watch one of the most discussed Punjabi-language films of recent years. Stay tuned!
