'Sarkar 3', 'Rangoon', 'Jagga Jasoos': Bollywood films that came, but couldn't conquer the box office

2017 saw some serious high-profile casualties at the box-office.

'Sarkar 3', 'Rangoon', 'Jagga Jasoos': Bollywood films that came, but couldn't conquer the box office
This year has proved that content and presentation work better than a star-studded line-up. With access to multiple video streaming services just a click away, the movie business has become a mighty competitive one. And, 2017 has seen quite a few duds coming from the Bollywood stable.

Except for a handful of blockbusters like 'Baahubali' and 'Dangal', most of the movies have fared pretty average at the box-office. Possibly, the biggest shockers of the year were Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan's 'Tubelight' and 'Jab Harry Met Sejal', respectively, which didn't exactly set the cash registers ringing.

Here's a round-up of all the movies that took a hit.

'Chef'

Release Date: October 6, 2017
Box Office Collection: Around Rs 10 cr
Budget: Rs 30 cr
The Saif Ali Khan-starrer was a remake of the English movie 'Chef' that released in 2014. The plot is based on a chef in Goa who rediscovers his passion for food, and a special bond with his son. Despite the strong plot, the film failed to impress the audience.

'Haseena Parkar'

Release Date: September 22, 2017
Box Office Collection: Around Rs 8 cr
Budget: Rs 25 cr
The movie, starring Shraddha Kapoor and Siddhanth Kapoor in lead roles, came and went, without creating much noise. Based on the life of Haseena Parkar, sister of the most-wanted underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, it had a weak start and failed to gather momentum.

'Lucknow Central'

Release Date: September 16, 2017
Box Office Collection: Around Rs 11 cr
ADVERTISEMENT
Budget: Rs 30 cr
The movie was about an aspiring singer, played by Farhan Akhtar, who lands in Lucknow Central jail after being falsely accused of murder. This prison-break film had drama, good actors and an interesting plot, but could not make a mark financially.

'Jab Harry Met Sejal'

Release Date: August 4, 2017
Box Office Collection: Around Rs 65 cr
Budget: Rs 80 cr
Directed by Imtiaz Ali, this was touted to be the love story of the year. Harry (Shahrukh Khan) and Sejal's (Anushka Sharma) romance left a bland aftertaste for the audiences, joining the likes of 'Sarkar 3'.

'A Gentleman'

Release Date: August 25, 2017
Box Office Collection: Rs 20 cr
Budget: Rs 70 cr
Although producers Fox Star recovered all the money spent to make the movie, this romantic-action film, featuring Sidharth Malhotra and Jacqueline Fernandez, incurred huge losses for the distributors after its release.

'Indu Sarkar'

Release Date: July 28, 2017
Box Office Collection: Around Rs 5 cr
Budget: Rs 11 cr
'Indu Sarkar' was a historical drama based on the Emergency between 1975-1977 declared by then PM Indra Gandhi. After facing criticism and struggling to receive clearance from the Censor Board, the Madhur Bhandarkar-directorial crawled at the box office.

'Jagga Jasoos'

Release Date: July 14, 2017
Box Office Collection: Around Rs 55 cr
Budget: Rs 75 cr (Ranbir Kapoor and Anurag Basu's pay not included)
Directed by Anurag Basu, the movie is about a young detective who is looking for his missing father. The life-changing adventure for the protagonist didn't bode well for the audiences. After the movie bombed, Ranbir's actor-father Rishi Kapoor, too, lamented about the film on Twitter.

'Tubelight'

Release Date: June 23, 2017
Box Office Collection: Around Rs 120 cr
Budget: Rs 100 cr
The historical war drama wasn't necessarily a flop, but it was a disappointment compared to any of the previous Salman Khan releases. This movie managed to cross the Rs 100 cr-mark only in two months, which is rare by Salman's standards.

'Bank Chor'

Release Date: June 16, 2017
Box Office Collection: Less than Rs 8 cr
Budget: Rs 15 cr
Riteish Deshmukh and Vivek Oberoi tried making an entry back in Bollywood with this movie, but the audience didn't seem too kicked to entertain them.

'Raabta'

Release Date: June 9, 2017
Box Office Collection: Less than Rs 26 cr
Budget: Rs 50 cr
Another love story that failed, and there weren't too many takers for the cinematic love story of Sushant Singh Rajput and Kriti Sanon who are rumoured to be dating.

'Behen Hogi Teri'

Release Date: June 9, 2017
Box Office Collection: Around Rs 2.5 cr
Budget: Rs 15 cr
Rajkummar Rao has many good movies added to his kitty this year, and 'Behen Hogi Teri' isn't one of them. The Shruti Haasan-starrer was a complete washout and tanked from Day 1 at the box office.

'Sarkar 3'

Release Date: May 12, 2017
Box Office Collection: Less than Rs 10 cr
Budget: Rs 35 cr
This political crime film, directed by Ram Gopal Varma, barely managed to recover even half of its production cost, despite Amitabh Bachchan being in the lead.

'Meri Pyaari Bindu'

Release Date: May 12, 2017
Box Office Collection: Around Rs 9.50 cr
Budget: Rs 22 cr
This Ayushmann Khurrana and Parineeti Chopra-starrer was one of the least appealing love stories to have bombed at the box office.

'Noor'

Release Date: April 21, 2017
Box Office Collection: Around Rs 8 cr
Budget: Rs 22 cr
Sonakshi Sinha-starrer 'Noor' was an adaptation of Pakistani author Saba Imtiaz's 'Karachi, You're Killing Me!', quietly made it to the theatres and left without anyone noticing.

'Rangoon'

Release Date: February 24, 2017
Box Office Collection: Around Rs 23 cr
Budget: Rs 70 cr
Despite a high-profile cast of Saif Ali Khan, Kangana Ranaut and Shahid Kapoor, the movie failed to justify its star power.
