Sarahah: All about the 'honesty' secret messaging app, how to download and why it has gone viral

NEW DELHI: Many of us love apps that lets us you send anonymous messages to someone. The 'Secret' app shot to fame within no time because of the similar theme. Now, Sarahah app seems to be the new rage. Introduced earlier this year, the Sarahah app allows users to send text messages to anyone, without revealing the identity of the sender.

What is Sarahah app all about

If you have made an account with Sarahah and have shared your ID online with anyone, they, without registering for the service will be able to click on your account ID and send any text. You will receive the text message but won't ever get to know who sent it.

However, the fun here is short lived as you cannot reply to a text message sent anonymously. You only get the option to share the massage on social media, report the user, block him/her and mark the message as a 'Favourite'.

The app has three sections. One shows all the received messages, while the other two show you messages that you have marked as Favourite and those which you have sent. There is also the option to search for users, Explore and take a look at your profile to tweak the account settings and share your account ID. The 'Explore' tab in particular is yet to be made live.



The app was created by a developer from Saudi Arabia called ZainAlabdin Tawfiq. And the word 'Sarahah' in Arabic means honesty. As the app says it on its description page: Sarahah helps you in discovering your strengths and areas for improvement by receiving honest feedback from your employees and your friends in a private manner.

How to download Sarahah app

Getting your hands on the Sarahah app is not difficult at all. You will only require a smartphone, iOS, Windows Phone or Android to use the app. It is available on both Google Play and the App Store. The app is free to download and use.

What's can go wrong with Sarahah

Although it's a fun app to use, Sarahah can also ruin the fun because of its very theme itself. Since you don't know who is on the other side of the text message, it becomes really very easy to promote cyberbullying. What's even worse is someone with critical information about you can easily blackmail you for personal favours.

Also possible is that someone can anonymously threaten you or the life of one of your family members. Since your Sarahah ID can be shared by anybody to anyone, literally anybody from around the globe will be able to troll you. Unfortunately, you won't be able to reply so you will be at the mercy of the person of the sender.

But if this app is bothering you a little too much, you can remove your account from the in-app searches others do or even revoke unauthorised users to send you a post.

Are you missing out on something if not using Sarahah?

Absolutely not. In my opinion nothing really. If you are not sharing those text messages on social media, letting others know what they already think about you, there's no use of the app as such. Much like Secret, Whisper and others, this may too loose its shine within days.
