Sanjay Reddy doesn't want changes to alter the beauty and history of the station located at Fort.
Sanjay Reddy’s, vice chairman, GVK, vision of T2 airport has turned it into a place where art is celebrated. Given that not too many public places offer visitors a chance to enjoy traditional paintings and sculptures, the aesthetic is a welcome addition for those flying in and out of the city.
At the recent ET Panache Dialogues, Reddy was asked whether other grand structures in the city, namely Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) could be turned into something like T2. “We all, as Mumbaikars and Indians, are proud of CST station which is not only a historical site but also a reflection of our past. In fact, it is one of the most beautiful buildings we have in India today,” says Reddy.
Sanjay Reddy feels there’s a lot of potential at CST to make art available to the masses.
He also says there’s a lot of potential at CST to make art available to the masses. “I think in today’s context, there are a lot of things that can be done and as matter of fact, I know that the railway minister Piyush Goyal has been contemplating how to modernise and bring about changes so that it becomes much more contemporary.”
Reddy however is adamant that these changes should not alter the beauty and history of the station located at Fort. “There is lots that can be done but it is very important that we don’t lose the basic spirit, ethos and look of the terminus. We have to find a way to enhance it and not change it. That is something that has to be done with a lot of love and affection. And a lot of thought,” he advises.

Mukherjee and Reddy echoed similar thoughts about art playing an important part in aiding the younger generation’s search for a cultural identity. “The younger generation isn’t able to connect back to their identity as Indians,” Reddy said. “The only way that identity will return is when people start appreciating the wealth of knowledge, history, culture, the social fabric that we’ve had for centuries. Exposure to art is one way to bring it back.”

Almost everyone is familiar with Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. But how many have visited the Bihar Museum in Patna to view the 3rd century BCE Didarganj Yakshi sculpture, considered one of the finest examples of Mauryan art?
