There are many things that playing a sport teaches you. But being able to take care of yourself on the streets is not something that immediately comes to mind. Except for Samir Modi, it does. Today he may delve in all things beauty with Colorbar Cosmetics, but as a school kid he was a boxing champion. And the combat sport taught him many key lessons.
During an earlier interaction with ETPanache, Modi recalled an incident from almost three decades ago, when speaking of the lessons that his days in the ring taught him.
“I had a knife pulled against my back once. It was a mugging incident in the streets of New York. I turned around and pushed the guy, he chased me down Broadway, with a knife in hand, in broad daylight. This was way back in 1986. In those days, the city was notorious,” he said.
Samir Modi of Colorbar Cosmetics The sport taught Modi very early on that life won’t be a “bed of roses.”
“Some people say it (boxing) is a ruthless sport. What do you do but just hit each other. But life is ruthless. In life, everyone has punches thrown at them. So you need to learn to take them as well as give them back,” he said.
