Salman Khan's father Salim took 'saat pheras' with wife. One promise to his father-in-law kept the marriage strong for 60 years. What was it?

Salman Khan's father and veteran screenwriter Salim Khan is known for penning some of the biggest Bollywood hits, including Sholay and Deewar. Besides his professional front, he is quite private about his personal life. However, recently, Salim Khan shared rare insights into his personal life, particularly his marriage to Salma Khan (born Sushila Charak). Their interfaith wedding, which took place over six decades ago, continues to be an example of love and mutual respect.

For the unversed, Salim and Salma got married in 1964, at a time when interfaith unions were not very common or widely accepted. Salim revealed to Free Press Journal, that Salma’s father, a dentist from the Dogra community, had initial objections to their marriage. While he respected Salim’s background and education, he was concerned about the religious difference. In fact, he even 'investigated' a background check before giving his approval.



However, Salim reassured his would-be father-in-law that religion would never come in the way of their relationship. “Even if we ever argue or fight, it will never be because of religion,” he said. And time has proven him right, the couple has been together for over 60 years, raising a large and close-knit family.

To respect both religious traditions, Salim and Salma had two wedding ceremonies. Salma, having grown up seeing her sister and cousin get married in the traditional Hindu way, wanted the saat phere ritual. Salim supported her completely and arranged for a pandit to conduct the ceremony. Later, they also had a Muslim nikaah, which is a formal way of confirming that the marriage is being entered into with full consent.

Together, Salim and Salma have four children: Salman Khan, Arbaaz Khan, Sohail Khan, and Alvira Khan Agnihotri. In 1981, Salim also married veteran actress Helen, and the family later adopted a daughter, Arpita Khan.
