Salman Khan revealed his mother, Sushila Charak’s father was opposed to her marriage with his father Salim, did not speak to them for years: ‘Till his last breath…’
During an episode of Bigg Boss 20’s Weekend Ka Vaar, the Bollywood superstar recalled that his maternal grandfather was deeply unhappy with the marriage and stopped speaking to Salim Khan for a period. Salman also explained why his nana disapprove...

“Let me tell you, when my parents got married, there was no religious connotation. Only my (maternal) grandfather was upset because my mom was marrying a good-looking man who aspires to be an actor. His objection was that she was getting married to someone from the film industry. My mom’s siblings were okay with this. They liked my father, but my grandfather wondered how his daughter would live in that atmosphere,” he said.
However, with time, the rift was healed. After five years of not speaking to his son-in-law, Salman’s nana travelled from Mahim to Bandra with sweets after Sohail was born. He also admitted he was regretful for missing out on his grandkids and getting to know the nicest man ever, as he had a narrative going on in his mind against them.
“He had this regret till his last breath. Once or twice, when mom and dad fought and mom went back to her house, my nana didn’t allow her into the house. He told her, ‘Go back to your house; you can come anytime, but you will not come here after fighting,” Salman recalled.
Salman is the eldest son of iconic screenplay writer Salim Khan and his first wife, Sushila Charak. The pair got married in November 1964. Their relationship became strained for a while when Salim married for the second time in 1981- this time to actress-dancer Helen. In an old interview, the Piya Tu dancer said she felt guilty about being involved with a much-married man, and her stepchildren were hostile towards her in the beginning.
“As kids they had their hostility. But they reacted the way their mother did. As I told you very honestly, it wasn’t as if Salma accepted the relationship happily straightaway and thanked me for it or said, ' You deserve an Oscar for it. So at that time there was hostility from the children,” she said. However, over the years, the children warmed up to Helen.
